Stamped Concrete vs. Plain Concrete Patio: Which Is Right for You?

Both options are durable, low-maintenance, and built to handle the Texas climate. The right choice depends on your budget, style goals, and how much upkeep you're willing to do. Here's an honest comparison.

What's the Difference?

Plain concrete (also called broom-finish concrete) is poured, leveled, and textured with a broom drag for traction. It has a clean, utilitarian look and is the most affordable option.

Stamped concrete uses rubber stamps pressed into freshly poured concrete to create patterns — slate, cobblestone, wood plank, brick, and more. Color can be added via integral pigment or surface stain. The result looks like a high-end material at a fraction of the cost of natural stone or pavers.

Cost Comparison

In the Tomball area, expect to pay roughly:

  • Plain concrete patio: $6–$9 per sq ft installed
  • Stamped concrete patio: $12–$18 per sq ft installed, depending on pattern complexity and color

For a 300 sq ft patio, that's roughly $1,800–$2,700 for plain vs. $3,600–$5,400 for stamped. Stamped costs more upfront, but when compared to the cost of natural stone or pavers ($20–$35+ per sq ft installed), it's still significantly more affordable for a high-end look.

Appearance

This is where stamped concrete has a clear advantage. Plain concrete has a functional, clean look — it's a great fit for modern or minimalist homes. But if you want a patio that looks like travertine, flagstone, or brick, stamped concrete delivers that without the cost or maintenance of the real materials.

Color options for stamped concrete are nearly unlimited. Popular choices in the Houston area include warm earth tones — sandstone, buff, terracotta — that complement the Texas landscape and typical home exteriors.

Durability

Both options are built from the same base material — concrete — so core durability is similar. A properly installed slab of either type will last 25–40 years in our climate.

The difference is in the surface. Stamped concrete has a sealer on top that protects the color and pattern. If that sealer degrades and isn't refreshed, the color can fade and the surface becomes more susceptible to staining. Plain concrete requires less upkeep in this regard because there's no color or texture to maintain.

Maintenance

Task Plain Concrete Stamped Concrete
Sealing Every 5–7 years (optional) Every 2–3 years (required to protect color)
Cleaning Hose or pressure wash Hose or pressure wash (avoid harsh chemicals)
Crack repair Fill with matching caulk More visible — color matching required
Resurfacing Can be resurfaced if needed Can be resealed and re-stained

Which Should You Choose?

Choose plain concrete if:

  • You want the lowest upfront cost
  • You prefer a clean, low-maintenance surface
  • The patio is primarily functional (grilling, storage, etc.)
  • You plan to add an outdoor rug or furniture that will cover most of the surface

Choose stamped concrete if:

  • Curb appeal and aesthetics are a priority
  • You want a patio that stands out and adds visual value to your home
  • You're comparing it to natural stone, brick, or pavers — stamped concrete will be less expensive and easier to maintain
  • You entertain outdoors and want an impressive space
